Marlene was born on April 28th, 1934, in the School District of Edenthal (RM of Rhineland along the Principal Meridian) just east of Edenburg. Her parents were David and Mary (Janzen) Wall. It was a family of 6 children and included sister Ellie, brother Armin, sister Irmgard (died in childhood), brother George and sister Angelynne.
Her parents were farmers and raised their family on the farm. She attended the first 9 years of grade school at Edenthal. For the following grades ten and eleven she attended MCI in Gretna, just as her mother, older sister and brother had done. In 1951 she was baptized and became a member of the Gretna Bergthaler Church.
Marlene had several hobbies and interests that she enjoyed when she was younger. She always loved to read and even during these last years, she kept right on reading as much as possible. She also loved cooking and baking which was a good thing since she cooked many meals for her family and friends. In her younger years, Marlene had taken a sewing course and she enjoyed the challenge of creating a finished item. She was a sociable person and enjoyed going to the regular Edenburg Ladies’ Aid meetings. She taught Sunday school classes at the Gretna church during the years the children attended and was a part of other Church committees.
In 1994 she moved to Gretna. She got a job and lived in town for 11 years. During these years she successfully completed her Grade 12 and joined WC Miller’s 2004 graduation class. In time she moved into Katharina Court in Altona. She loved living at Katharina Court and each neighbour was a dear friend to her. During this time, she was active in translating and researching for the Mennonite Historical Society which she did for 17 years. The Altona Mennonite Church eventually became her home church and she felt very welcome and appreciated by the congregation.
Marlene always said she had a wonderful family. They were creative and caring, opinionated and vocal, inspiring and interesting, fearlessly going into new and untried directions. They helped shape her into the person she became. Marlene loved the relationships she had with her children and grandchildren and was enriched on hearing about the events, successes and challenges in their lives. She was delighted at the arrival of great-grandchildren and was pleased to see the new generation, recognizing familiar family traits in the new arrivals.
Marlene is survived by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, daughter Rosemarie; son Bernie (Rhonda), grandchildren Dana and Ben; son David, grandchildren, Sara (David) and Thomas (Claire); son Armin (Angela), grandchildren, Bob and Megan; daughter Gredi (Ward) Patrick, grandchildren, Christopher, Paul, and Jesse (Yolanda) with 2 children; daughter Imy (Larry) Rempel, grandchildren Shaun (Trish) with 1 child, Jackson (Liliana) with 2 children; Matthew (Ashlee) with 2 children, and Erika (Paul) with 1 child; daughter Marlene (Larry) Falk, grandchildren, Ashley (Marlin) with 2 children, Justin (Karissa) with 3 children, and Kayla (Kyle) with 2 children. She is also survived by her brother George (Frieda) Wall, and was predeceased by 3 sisters and 1 brother.
On April 29th, the day after her 90th birthday, Marlene suffered a massive stroke. It was unrecoverable and by God's mercy she was taken home to her eternal rest on May 2, 2024.
Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Psalm 90:1
