Margareta Martens (nee Klassen)

Peacefully on Thursday, November 7th, with her family by her side, Margareta Martens, passed away at the Altona Memorial Health Centre.

Margareta was born on November 13th, 1939, to John E.K. and Maria Klassen (nee Bergan) in Rosenfeld, MB.

She grew up in the Wiedenfeld district of Horndean, MB where she went to school, and helped on the farm. She was the youngest girl of a family of 13 brother & sisters. She lived and worked in Winnipeg for a short time as well.

Margareta married Peter Martens on July 24th,1960, at the Altona Sommerfeld Mennonite Church, in Altona, MB. She made her home on the rural property 4 miles north of Horndean, and lived there the remainder of her life. Mom was a homemaker for most of her life. She taught Sunday School at the Kronswiede Sommerfeld church for some time as well. She would occasionally work jobs outside the home, either helping with painting homes, or as a cook at a restaurant, such as the Four Winds Restaurant in Altona (with her sister Marie), or at the Happy Wanderer Restaurant in Plum Coulee. Some of Margareta's hobbies were crocheting / knitting  /sewing. I know she took great pride in her work and loved to gift her sweaters / dresses to children of extended family members. She also loved to read & puzzle. I’m not sure were she found the time for all these hobbies, as she worked hard on the yard as well. She loved her flowers, and flower gardens, and gardens in general. She loved the outdoors as well. One highlight of hers was a Fly in fishing trip her & dad took one year with friends, and she thoroughly enjoyed her time up north at our cabin at Grand Rapids, MB.

Margareta is survived by her husband Peter Martens, son Danny Martens, daughter Maggie (Dwight) Fehr, grandchildren Luke (Kara) Fehr, Shelby Fehr, sister Helen Hiebert, and brother George (Marge) Klassen, and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased her parents, 6 brothers and 4 sisters.

We as a family are thankful for each and every one that came to see mom while her long stay in the hospital. She loved her visits with you all. We are also very thankful for everyone that has shown their support to us during this time. Your prayers, texts, food, flowers, and other expressions of love have been and are so greatly appreciated.

Viewing will be at Wiebe Funeral Home Altona on Monday, November 11th, from 1:00 - 9:00 pm.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday November 12th, 2024, at 2:00 pm at the Altona Sommerfeld Mennonite Church with burial at the Altona Cemetery.
