Lena Hoffman

Helena “Lena” Hoffman was born August 1, 1932 on the Homestead in Altona Manitoba. She was married to Albert Hoffman on June 22, 1950. They were married for 70 years when Albert passed away on September 11, 2020.

She is survived by three children, Bill (Roseann), Irene (Dave), and Jim, as well as five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Ann (Jake) Enns, in-laws Anita Braun, Karlene Hoffman, Irene Braun, Harold (Marge) Hoffman, Denis Hoffman, Marvin Hoffman and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one son Jackie Kenneth, her parents Abram and Helena Dueck, sister Lisa (John), and brother Abe (Susan).

Lena completed her elementary schooling to grade 8. She was baptized upon confession of her faith on May 29, 1950 by Bishop Peter Toews in Altona . After her marriage to Albert in 1950 they settled on a farm in the Hochstadt district for several years.  They eventually moved to the farm in Schoenthal where they resided until they moved to town.

She loved gardening, cooking, and baking. She worked at Friesen part time and enjoyed her job and the people she worked with. She was active in church, and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was involved with ladies group and serving committees .

When Albert and Lena retired, they moved to Altona in 1995. Once she adjusted to living in town she really enjoyed it. She loved playing cards with family and friends and loved having the grandchildren over. There was always a lot of cookies, cakes, and always something in the fridge in case anyone would pop in. She loves to have people over. She was incredibly generous and thrived on making meals for her family, relatives, church and friends. She always had a table full of delicious food. Lena loved to volunteer at the MCC. She had a very hard time letting that go. She enjoyed every minute of it.

Lena’s health started failing due to dementia and was no longer able to manage safely at home. She moved to Gardens Apartments on September 11, 2019. She had a hard time adjusting at first and still always wanted to go home. She stayed at the Apartments until February 24, 2022 when she moved to Rosewood at Eastview Place. She adjusted well moving to the care home. The last year she lived there she was blessed to have her best friend Katie live two doors from her room.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at Rosewood for their caring and compassion. She loved the staff very much.  Big thank you to the special people who called, prayed, texted, and sent flowers, cards and food. These expressions of love and support are greatly appreciated.

For those who wish, donations in memory of Lena may be made to MCC.
