After a long and difficult battle with cancer, Joyce Helen Loewen passed away at the age of 73 on Saturday, December 17th, 2022 at Altona Memorial Health Center. She was predeceased by her parents, Helen Hiebert and Lawrence Hiebert and by her twin brother John Hiebert.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband Lloyd Loewen of Altona, her children Lonny (Juanita) Peters Loewen and Krista Loewen, her grandchildren Nahla and Matai Peters Loewen, and her brother, Henry (Margaret) Hiebert of Winkler.
Joyce was born in Winnipeg on March 19th, 1949. Her childhood was spent at the family home in Horndean where her parents owned and operated the local grocery store, Larry’s Lunch. She married Lloyd on November 2, 1968. Prior to marriage and until starting a family, Joyce worked at Braun Drug. When the kids were in their teens, she enjoyed working as a server at Grace’s Place.
Joyce was a diligent homemaker, silly, and shy. She found true joy in gardening, flowers and working on her beautiful yard. Pottery, skiing, and curling were hobbies she enjoyed earlier in life. Some of her favorite things were ginger, black-capped chickadees, and pansies. Together, Lloyd and Joyce visited numerous countries, enjoying the company of each other as travelling companions. When they built their new house in 1996, Joyce acted as forewoman, designing and eventually curating the space into a beautiful and cozy home.
Joyce was baptized in 1969 as a member of the Altona Bergthaler Church. She loved Jesus and sharing her love for the Lord with friends through Friendship Bible Study, the Koininia Ladies Group and through acts of service, including overseeing the cradle roll for many years.
Joyce was lovingly surrounded by family during her last days. The family would like to express our deep gratitude to Dr. Rimmer, Dr. Ahmed, Dr. Woelk, Dr. Haq and their staff.
A private funeral service will be held.
Donations in memory of Joyce may be made to Back to the Bible, or to the Altona Community Foundation.
