Hilda was born on
October 7, 1941, to Ed and Mary Toews of Eigenhof. At age 16, she left home to work as a switchboard operator for Manitoba Telephone System (MTS). Shortly after, she met a handsome young man named Andy from Neubergthal and were married on
August 19, 1962. They lived in Winnipeg for a couple of years before settling in Andy's home village of Neubergthal.
In 1969, they adopted their chosen son, Jim, who married Jill Condra in 2006 and had one son, Andrew.
In 1973, they adopted their chosen daughter Nancy, who married Lane Hatland in 2013 and had four children, Khrystyn, Amethyst, Zaven, Zarantha, and welcomed Hilda's only great-grandchild, Skylar (Khrystyn's daughter).
After Nancy started kindergarten, Hilda went to work in many different kitchens in Altona as a cook. In the late 90s, she went to work at Penner Foods before retiring in the early 2000s.
In 2008, Andy and Hilda sold their home in Neubergthal and moved into the Buffalo Apartments in Altona, and found another family in all of their neighbours there.
Hilda was beloved by her family, friends, coworkers and customers. She was known to cause a little trouble and pull pranks on family, friends and coworkers. She had a friendly and funny personality, that made people love her. She was always laughing and joking with people around her and created joy wherever she went. She was filled with love for her family and friends, and was a lot of love in a tiny package. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild, as well as three brothers, one sister, and many nieces, nephews, and their families.
In 2013, Hilda was predeceased by Andy, her loving husband of 51 years. She was also predeceased by her parents Ed and Mary Toews, and her niece Jennifer Toews.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all of the staff of the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg for the exemplary care they provided, with a special thank you to her nurse Mikee, who gave her the VIP treatment throughout her stay.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 13 at 3:00pm at Bergthaler Church in Altona. Interment and refreshments to follow.
Funeral services provided by Wiebe Funeral Home in Altona. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).
