Gertrude Rempel

Gertrude Rempel, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister, age 87 years, of Altona, formerly of the Gretna area, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at the Altona Memorial Health Centre.

Mom is survived by her husband Jacob J. Rempel and their children, Susan (David) Reid, Elaine (Garry) Russell, Esther (Ken) Enns, Harv (Eva) Rempel, Marlene (Ralph) Wagner, and Steve (Carol) Rempel, as well as 10 grandchildren, Lukas (Juanita), Janel (Ken), Karis (Izzy), Ruben (Jennifer), Matthew (Dayna), Tonya (Jared), Maxine, James, Emily, and Evan, and nine great grandchildren, Anthony, Aimee, Annabelle, Logan, Parker, Omar, Ayah, Brayden, Dakota. She was also survived by brothers, Bernie and Dave (Pat) and sister, Anne (Neil) Unger, sisters-in-law, Helen and Marie, and Dad's surviving Rempel siblings, Bill and Tina, Helen, Justina, Margaret and Bill, along with a large extended family.

Mom was born and grew up in Altbergthal on December 14, 1928, to Susanna and Peter Wiebe. She married Jacob in 1950, and lived on the farm with him till 1989, when they moved to Altona. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Together, they enjoyed extensive travels throughout Canada and the USA in their retirement. Mom had a keen interest in the lives of their grandchildren and extended family and prayed for them daily. Besides the work of childraising and work on the farm, she enjoyed gardening, ladies' aid, painting projects, reading, crocheting, quilting, and puzzling. A walk outside was a daily necessity. She had a heart for the disadvantaged and went out of her way to help them.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the Altona Bergthaler Mennonite Church with interment at the Altona Cemetery.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of home care, Altona Hospital, Handi-van, and Gardens on Tenth for their care for Mom. Special thanks to Altona Bergthaler Mennonite Church for their pastoral care and Wiebe's Funeral Home.
