Isaac Daniel (Danny) Hiebert was born to Susan and Isaac Hiebert on April 21, 1950 in Altona Manitoba. After a prolonged struggle with his health, Dan passed away on Sept 30th 2024 at the age of 74 in the Altona Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents Isaac and Susan Hiebert, his brother David and sisters Dorothy and Edna.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife Iris, his children Cynthia (Carey) Friesen and their children Ayla and Samuel, and Michael (Jocelyn) Hiebert and their children Emily and Katelin. He is also survived by his sisters Irene (Randy) Schroeder and Elsie (Maurice) Pelletier and many nieces and nephews.
Dan and Iris met in high school, went on their first date in August 1968 and were married on May 20th 1972. Cynthia joined their family in 1977 and Michael in 1981.
Working hard was always a priority for Dan. He enjoyed many years in the automotive industry working at Rhineland Car, Tri-lite Service and West Park Motors. In the early 1980’s he switched careers to work for Manitoba Mennonite Mutual as a Loss Prevention Officer. After a brief period working for Bueckert Motors in the mid 1990’s he was back in the insurance business working for Red River Mutual Insurance until he began retirement in 2015.
Dan was deeply local. He lived in Altona most of his life and many of those years were lived in the service of others. He was an enthusiastic and dedicated community member, volunteering for the Altona Fire Department, the Lions Club, Parkside School Mentorship Program, delivering Christmas food hampers, the EMMC Men’s breakfasts and much more. He spent many hours at the Kiddie Sunshine Centre helping with building improvements, equipment repairs and fundraising whenever it was needed. He loved helping his friends and family and neighbours with all kinds of building projects and we don’t have to look far to see his handywork.
Dan was a man of the backroads and shortcuts and almost never used a map to find any place in southern Manitoba between Brandon and Buffalo Point. He liked camping, travelling and ‘just going for a drive’. He enjoyed cooking, trying new recipes often. When asked “What did you make?” (about a new food creation) he would usually just reply with a smirk and with a twinkle in his eye and say “Try it first… then I’ll tell you!” For many years, on the last weekend of July, on Saturday you could reliably find him cooking in the back of the Pioneer Centre for the Sunflower Festival Mennonite Food Booth and on Sunday working hard at the Cripple Creek Music Festival.
He was always a bit of a “character”, having a strong opinion about anything that you’d ask him; Once he’d say it, he was stubborn to the end and would not take that back. But underneath the stubbornness was a commitment to do what was right and under that was a deeper commitment to love and to love us deeply. He found great joy in his children and grandchildren, feeling most content when surrounded by the lively noise and activity of his family and friends.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 4, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Altona EMM Church with interment at the Altona Cemetery. Viewing will be at the church prior to the service.
